i’ve been practising the waldstein sonata. this happens whenever i’m away from home (either in ithaca or in singapore) – the only constant in all libraries throughout the world, regardless of how pathetic their score collection is (no offence to anyone i’ve visited), is Beethoven’s sonatas. and I must say the collection here is pathetic indeed. But i can subsist on his sonatas. and this time, I’ll subsist on Waldstein.
can i just say though, the allegro con brio has got the absolutely most ridiculous ending i’ve ever heard. it is no wonder satie chose to parody this Great and his cadence obligée. it’s so clumsy, it positively spoils the entire thing. perhaps i’ll just omit the last 3 bars and somehow segue into the next mvt.
