so i’ve signed up for the chinese version of fb which is also known as 人人网 for certain personal reasons and it is really quite brilliant. as we all know fb has been blocked by the great firewall of china and obviously, the chinese being chinese, have come up with a pirated version of fb that not only has all of its functionalities but comes with MORE.
1. the avatar. 人人网’s avatar distinguishes users by gender, and the girl one is the stereotypical chinese girl with 2 pigtails. look.
as you can see my university is verified. somehow, without my putting in my cornell netID they managed to access cornell’s records and verify that i am indeed a student there, because i got a page that said
amazing(ly scary) intel.
fb had me enter my uni email address for verification coz they didn’t know to use the backdoor of hackery.
2. there is a widget that tells you who last visited yr profile = if you want to stalk, you shld 光明正大地 stalk.
see my name right up there? i clicked a random profile and he can see which strangers visited his profile and if they’re online. that’s crazy. and awesome. so in line with govt policy – we are watching you – we know it, and you know it, so there’s transparency right there for you.
3. i hadn’t signed up for more than 1 minute when someone already added me. someone from rgs i knew from long ago from the beijing math immersion trip who i hadn’t talked to SINCE the beijing math immersion trip. and i hadn’t input any information about being from singapore or being from rgs, just that i was at cornell and i only used my first name (爱芳）because 人人网 refused to accept 汤爱芳 thinking it was a hoax i guess because 汤 is a really rare surname. and yet she managed to find me and add me almost instantaneously, no doubt from some friend suggestion thing. i have a feeling they searched through her inbox and found my email address and so suggested it. amazing.
5. their games are far cooler than fb games. check this out
just got an email asking me to try out their games.
“please play.. happy farm! vegetables and fruits, want to plant then plant, happily become farm-owners with your friends, you can even pick fruits illegally from other people’s farms!” Mr McGregor would not be happy on 人人网。 only in china will you have a game app that encourages players to kope free fruit from other people’s farms.
isn’t that just awesome piracy? i am so proud to be chinese. we can take anything, copy it, and make it cheaper AND better. of coz the ‘better’ is just reserved for the chinese. the ‘cheaper’ is reserved for the mass-manufactured products that pervade the rest of the world. well obviously.
