My Italian prof saw this score on my table while i was working on a ripasso in italian and asked about it.
“Si fosse foco? Suoni sulla campana?”
“Sì, ho suonato questa canzone oggi giorno sulla campana.”
“A che ora hai suonato?”
“Ho suonato alle sette e quarantacinque di mattina.”
“!! Alle sette e tre quarti?? Devi suonare ogni mattina?”
“No, solo lunedì.”
“Ah. solo lunedì, eh. Mi dispiace!”
We learnt this in italian last yr, to instill in us the un modo del periodo ipotetico, where a clause in the congiuntivo imperfetto (“Si fosse foco”) is accompanied by a clause in the condizionale (“arderei’l mondo”).
It’s delightfully sadistic so I scored it for the chimes and played it monday morning in the middle of all the hymns.
Here’s the testo.
S’i’ fosse foco, arderei ‘l mondo;
s’i’ fosse vento, lo tempestarei;
s’i’ fosse acqua, i’ l’annegherei;
s’i’ fosse Dio, mandereil’ en profondo;
If i were fire, i would burn the earth
if i were wind, i would create a tempest
if i were water, i would drown everyone
if i were God i would sink the earth into the depths
S’i’ fosse papa, sarei allor giocondo,
ché tutt’i cristiani imbrigherei;
s’i’ fosse ‘mperator, sa che farei?
a tutti mozzerei lo capo a tondo.
If i were the pope i would be rather glad
I’d get all the christians in trouble
if i were the emperor, do you know what i would do?
i would chop off everyone’s heads.
S’i’ fosse morte, andarei a mi’ padre;
s’i’ fosse vita, fuggirei da lui:
similemente faria da mi’ madre,
S’i’ fosse Cecco, com’i’ sono e fui,
torrei le donne giovani e leggiadre:
le vecchie e laide lasserei altrui.
if i were death i would visit my father
if i were life, i would flee from him
I would do the same to my mother
if i were Cecco, like i am and was,
i would entice the ladies, the young and the beautiful ladies
and flee from the old and ugly ones.
it’s not in like.. queen’s italian, more like a sienese dialect.
